Cambridge v Doncaster Rovers
22nd November 2005
It was November; the date, 22nd.
Doncaster Rovers in the LDV beckoned,
We don't stand a chance, the bloke next to me reckoned,
Don't write us off, I replied...
This evening, the Champions League did coincide,
Which meant many U's fans stayed inside,
Perhaps afraid that the sniffles, the cold weather would provide.
Or that they'll slip on some frozen water...
On the bench was that new bloke called Porter.
Our aim was to get to the LDV final quarter,
On our day, any team we can slaughter,
Tonight we were looking to shine...
We scored quite early with a goal on nine,
Morrison rose with a header - quite divine.
Looking matured like a vintage wine,
But really only seventeen...
Fola made it 2, with a finish far from pristine,
But they all count, at least he was keen,
But their keeper might be needing doses of morphine,
That looked like a nasty knock...
But when 40 minutes was on the clock,
Leo Fortune-West's goal came as a shock,
Regardless of numerous attempts to block,
He scrambled the ball into the net...
We were half way to a 2nd round upset,
The weather wasn't going to threat,
Though you could fit all the warm air inside a pipette
Out they came for the 2nd half...
Tonight was certainly weather for hat and scarf,
The new song for Hanlon generated a laugh,
But then Doncaster's Lewis Guy played a ball in to the path,
Of Fortune West to make it two all...
It seemed likely that here, United's mini cup-run might stall,
and the night grew colder than on the peaks of Nepal,
United we stand, United we never shall fall.
My ideas for this match report are getting thinner and thinner...
But then Hanlon scored a thunderbolt of a winner,
With a goal so yummy, I'd have it for my dinner,
Hit it with his right foot inner,
Cambridge United 3-2 Doncaster.
Give me an L, give me a D, and give me a V...
LDV, LDV, LDV, LDV, LDV!!!
